When a government agency proposes a new rule or policy, federal and state law requires a public comment period. A window of time when anyone can submit a written response that the agency must formally consider before finalizing its decision. It’s one of the most useful tools the public has on regulatory policy, yet most people never use it.

These scripts make it easy to participate. Each one is written for a specific open comment period, giving you clear, effective language you can submit as-is or adapt in your own words. Comments that are personal and specific carry more weight, so even small edits make a difference.

Agencies are required to read and respond to substantive comments. Your submission goes on the official record. It takes just a few minutes, and it counts.

How it works

Organization: These are organized by last date to leave a comment and are divided into “public lands” and “environment".” Public lands are things like the Boundary Waters & Oregon timber harvesting. Environment are things like the clean water act and endangerment findings.

Open the script: Each link below goes to a Google doc comment script tied to an active rulemaking, with a direct submission link included.

Personalize it: Adding one sentence about how the rule affects you or your community makes your comment far more impactful.
